A Small Warning

I photograph businesses through the people in them.

Which means that if your main priority is a comprehensive collection of bathrooms, plug sockets, meeting rooms, light switches, and seventeen slightly different angles of the reception area, Iโ€™m probably not your photographer.

Thatโ€™s not because those things arenโ€™t important.

Itโ€™s just that Iโ€™ve never looked at a beautifully photographed toilet and thought:

 โ€œNow I understand this business.โ€

 Businesses are made of people.

The owner who built the business.

The person everybody comes back to see.

The atmosphere.

The quirks.

The relationships.

The dog who believes he runs the place.

The room is often the context.

The people are usually the story.

So yes, Iโ€™ll photograph the spaces that help tell the story.

But if your dream gallery is primarily an inventory of every room in the building, we may not be the best match.

If youโ€™d rather show people what it feels like to work with you, weโ€™ll probably get along very well.

From ยฃ1850

Some stories need more than a chapter. This one begins before the shoot itself. Weโ€™ll have dedicated time where we can talk through ideas, themes, locations, symbolism, the people involved, and the story weโ€™re trying to tell. Iโ€™ll spend time getting to know you, listening, and paying attention to the things that make what you do uniquely yours. This is the most collaborative and in-depth way to work together, with time to explore ideas, follow unexpected directions, and create a body of work that feels genuinely connected to who you are. Youโ€™ll also receive What I Noticed โ€” a short written reflection on the themes, atmosphere, strengths, and observations that emerged during our time together. Get in touch for a tailored quote.

SO YOU ARE STILL CURIOUS

SO YOU ARE STILL CURIOUS

How the business works, why it works that way, how it became this particular thing. Iโ€™m interested in the person running it because a surprising amount of the business lives inside your head. My training allows me to work this way. Social work, positive psychology, coaching psychology and therapeutic photographyโ€”years of learning how to enter a world Iโ€™m not from without assuming I already understand it.

A holding space

The way I work with people has a name, and I borrowed it from social work. Holding space. Mine is portable.

Itโ€™s hard to describe if youโ€™ve never been in one, so hereโ€™s the opposite. Think of every conversation where you could feel the other person waiting for you to finish. Where you gave the sensible, polished version of what you do. Where you said โ€œanyway, sorry, Iโ€™m ramblingโ€ and stopped talking about the part of your business you actually care about. None of that happens here. You can ramble. Thatโ€™s usually where the good bits live.

That kind of space doesnโ€™t need a studio. Itโ€™s made out of the way I am with you, which means I can take it anywhere.

(01)

My full attention.

When Iโ€™m with you, Iโ€™m with you. Iโ€™m not waiting for my turn to speak or trying to steer everything back towards a photograph I had already imagined. Full attention isnโ€™t something I can mass-produce, which is why I donโ€™t pack my diary with shoots. Iโ€™d rather do it properly for a few people than half of it for everyone.

(02)

Genuine curiosity.

I listen, ask questions and follow where your answers lead. Sometimes another question appears, followed by another one, and we end up in a part of the business you werenโ€™t expecting to talk about. I want to understand the things that make perfect sense to you but may require further explanation for the rest of us.

(03)

Choice.

You decide what you share and what you keep. You donโ€™t have to hand over your whole life story just because Iโ€™ve turned up with a camera.

(04)

Safety and care.

People can become vulnerable around me and still feel okay. Vulnerability isnโ€™t required and it isnโ€™t something Iโ€™m trying to produce. But if it appears, Iโ€™ll meet it with care rather than embarrassment, judgement or an immediate attempt to turn it into content.

(05)

Play

Not everything has to be discovered by sitting sensibly and discussing it. We can follow an odd idea, use an object, make something, move around or try a photograph simply because weโ€™re curious about what might happen. We can be sensible again later.

The possibility of seeing yourself differently.

The possibility of seeing yourself differently.

I canโ€™t promise transformation on demand. That sounds exhausting for everyone. But having this kind of attention and space may help you reconnect with yourself and your business, notice something new about it, or recognise what you want other people to see.

And the whole time, Iโ€™m picking things up. Thatโ€™s the documentary training. The way you hold a tool youโ€™ve held ten thousand times. The route you take round your own workshop without thinking about it. The thing you do at four oโ€™clock every day that youโ€™ve never once described to anyone, because why would you.

Some of the photographs happen right there. Others we build afterwards, once we know what weโ€™re looking forโ€”set up properly, thought about, made together. Both come out of the same conversation. They are not simply pictures taken once weโ€™ve finished talking. They are part of what we discover and make together.

Impact

So why are we making these photographs?

There should probably be a point to all this.

The impact wonโ€™t be the same for everyone. It would make my job considerably easier if there was a standard answer hiding somewhere in my camera bag.

And thatโ€™s why the photography packages donโ€™t become more valuable simply because there are more photographs. Otherwise,I could just keep pressing the shutter.

They become more valuable because there is more opportunity to understand who you really are and what your business is about.

I donโ€™t decide what the impact should be. We establish it together.

Then reality gets to tell us what the real impact actually was.

Imagine a blanket I can carry with me and unfold wherever we happen to be working. It can appear around a kitchen table, in your workshop, on a walk, or wherever your world happens to be.

Thereโ€™s room on it to think, wonder, contradict yourself, laugh, or admit you have no idea how any of this would look in a photograph.

Itโ€™s not a big blanket, but we can start here.
